An Introduction to the Orthodox Church
Let us start by saying, Orthodox Christianity is not something we learn about in a book (or website). Orthodox Christianity is learned through relationship. The Orthodox Church is the bride of Christ. We must get to know Christ through relationship. Relationship with Christ and with others. We invite you to come in person and experience Christ and His Church so we can begin that relationship.
When did the Orthodox Church start?
The Orthodox Church was officially founded on the Great and Holy Day of Pentecost. When the Holy Spirit descended upon the Holy Apostles, the Orthodox Church was born!
What makes the Orthodox Church different?
As mentioned above, the Church was founded on the day of Pentecost. Christ did not establish multiple churches during His earthly ministry. Christ creates a single Church. One of the last things Christ prays before ascending to Heaven is "May they be one, just as we are one." (John 17:22). Christ promises us that "the gates of Hell will not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18). The Orthodox Church is unique as it is this same Church that Christ founded and gave this promise too.
Do I have to be Orthodox to visit your Church?
Not at all! Please take this as our personal invitation for you to come and see the Orthodox Church. All are welcome in Christ's Church. You may join us and participate in almost all aspects of our worship. Sacraments are reserved only for Orthodox Christians who are properly prepared to receive them. This means that when you join us on a Sunday morning, we welcome you to join us in prayer, but ask that you do not approach to receive communion. That is, until you are Orthodox.
What should I expect when I visit?
When you visit, you will experience the biblical worship of the Church. For those who have never experienced an Orthodox service, this can be a lot to take in. Just take a breath and let it sink in. Listen to the prayers and singing, look at the beautiful iconography that adorns our parish, and smell the incense. If you are lost, that's okay! Feel free to ask someone near you if you need help following along. We are just glad you are here. When you visit, please be sure to introduce yourself to Father Spyridon. As we mentioned, Christianity is all about relationships. We look forward to meeting you!
